I feel as though I’ve been hearing about the Beyond Burger for eons. Developed by Beyond Meat, a company that’s arguably changed the whole damn game when it comes to vegan meat substitutes, the Beyond Burger is meant to simulate ground beef hamburger patties as close as possible.
This product finally made its way onto the local Whole Foods shelves last week. Reed and I were eager to test drive these burgers, so I swung through the store after work and picked up a package. At $7 for two patties, I prayed we would like them enough to make the purchase worth it — it was a bit of a splurge!
In an effort to make these burgers extra tasty, I also picked up some Field Roast Chao Creamy Original Slices, because no veggie burger made at our home is complete without, and I grabbed a jar of pickles for good measure.
The Beyond Burger is… an experience.
I don’t know how else to talk about it! It’s an experience.
I haven’t had real beef in years, so I can’t say whether or not it tastes like real beef. But it certainly has the texture of real beef, or at least what I remember of it. After eating this burger I honestly felt kind of dirty. I can’t say with finality whether I liked it because I was so caught up in how weird it was.
One of the reasons I initially cut meat out of my diet is that I really don’t like it. The texture of meat — any kind of meat, but especially beef — freaks me out. I can’t eat fat without gagging; I don’t like anything I have to chew excessively to be able to swallow it. My experiences with eating meat have never been particularly enjoyable. It makes sense that my experience with eating the Beyond Burger would be odd, as well.
I didn’t hate it. I liked the flavor! It was just weird overall, mostly because of the texture.
My main motivation in trying this product was to be able to discuss it with omnivores. I think this burger could be a hit with people who are looking to eat less meat, or to cut it out completely. A friend said her omnivorous partner enjoyed the Beyond Burger, which gives them a potential Meatless Monday meal they can both enjoy. I think that’s really great!
Beyond Meat has created a really unique product with Beyond Burger. I just don’t know if it’s the right product for me. However, I’d be willing to try it again, especially in a group setting, since I really think it does appeal to eaters across the board.
Reed also pointed out that it might be good if we just reformed the patties into meatballs — which is something I definitely want to try, at some point! I love experimenting with food.
Overall, I think the Beyond Burger is really remarkable, although I don’t think it will become a regular meal for us. If you’ve tried it, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Comment below or hit me up on Twitter so we can talk about it!
